Inspired by the movement of tunnel books and other artist book forms, Look-Out, Look-In displays an image across the blades while open, and a "tunnel" image while closed. The open image is a blend of visual motifs from a fan inherited from my deceased grandmother, and a photograph of myself and my sister as children as she points out into the forrest. The closed image is based on a photograph taken the same day where I am hiding in the decayed remains of a fallen tree. This piece reflects on personal growth: a moment of looking out with excitement for the unknown future, while looking in to acknowledge the fear of leaving what is safe and familiar.
